The Decline of Goodreads: A Missed Opportunity in the Book-Loving Community

Once a beloved platform for readers, Goodreads has seen a dramatic fall from grace. Acquired by Amazon in 2013, it has faced mounting criticism for its outdated design, poor moderation, and alienation of users and authors alike.

Outdated Design Frustrates Users

Goodreads’ interface and functionality feel stuck in the early 2000s. Despite boasting 125 million users in 2022, the platform offers minimal updates. Issues like its clunky search, five-star-only rating system, and buggy app leave users frustrated.

Publishing consultant Jane Friedman remarked that Goodreads has failed to evolve like other social platforms, despite being backed by Amazon. This stagnation has alienated readers seeking a more modern and interactive experience.

Moderation Issues and Scandals

Goodreads has become infamous for its toxic culture, particularly through review-bombing, where books are attacked en masse with negative reviews. Even high-profile authors, like Elizabeth Gilbert, have been targeted. Gilbert withdrew her novel The Snow Forestafter a wave of criticism for its Russian setting, an example of Goodreads’ unchecked hostility.

The Cait Corrain incident further underscored these moderation problems. The debut author used fake accounts to downrate competitors’ books and fabricated evidence to deflect blame before confessing. Her career is now over, illustrating the destructive consequences of Goodreads’ lax oversight.

Amazon’s Role in Goodreads’ Stagnation

As Goodreads’ parent company, Amazon has been criticized for neglecting the platform. Algorithms prioritize popular titles over discovery, turning users’ “to-read” lists into overwhelming obligations. Amazon’s controversies, including Jeff Bezos’ political stances, have also eroded trust in Goodreads.

Rising Alternatives

Goodreads’ decline has opened opportunities for competitors like The StoryGraph, BookSloth, and Libib. These platforms provide features such as half-star ratings, tailored recommendations, and better community engagement. While none match Goodreads’ size, they offer a glimpse of what a modern book community could achieve.

Is Goodreads Worth Saving?

Despite its flaws, Goodreads still represents a unique community where readers share their passion for books. To remain relevant, the platform must prioritize moderation, update its features, and foster a healthier environment. Without significant changes, Goodreads risks becoming obsolete—a relic of its once-promising potential.
