Readmoo, a Taiwanese company, is set to release the MooInk V, the first foldable eReader, developed in collaboration with E Ink. It features an 8-inch E Ink Gallery 3 screen that folds in half to fit in a pocket. Unlike most color eReaders that use color filters, the MooInk V uses actual color micropixels for better color quality, though it lacks true black text. The device took 9 years to develop and passed 200,000 folding tests.
The casing is made of aluminum-magnesium alloy with a matte texture. It weighs around 255 grams, but no size dimensions are provided. Notably, it doesn’t have a frontlight. No pricing or release date has been announced, and it may initially be limited to China.
While it’s a significant innovation in eReader design, the lack of frontlight, potential high price, and niche appeal may limit its adoption. Still, it offers an interesting alternative in a market where portability is becoming less prioritized.
