Kobo’s Missed Opportunity: No True Kindle Paperwhite Alternative for Disgruntled Kindle Users

It looks like Amazon’s recent decision to remove USB downloads for Kindle books has frustrated many users, leading them to explore alternatives. Kobo seems like the most viable option, as it not only offers an ebook store with downloadable Adobe EPUB files but also sells dedicated ereaders. However, Kobo’s current lineup doesn’t include a true equivalent to Amazon’s most popular Kindle model—the Kindle Paperwhite—making it difficult for some users to make the switch.

The 6″ Kobo Clara BW is the closest option for those looking for a compact black-and-white ereader, but it’s priced higher than the entry-level Kindle while feeling like a downgrade compared to newer Paperwhite models due to its plastic build and smaller screen. Beyond that, Kobo’s black-and-white ereader options are limited to two outdated models:

Kobo Elipsa 2E (10″) – An expensive eNote with a lower resolution than Amazon’s Kindle Scribe.

Kobo Sage (8″) – A premium design with page buttons and a flush screen, but with poor battery life and an uneven frontlight, plus it’s aging and may soon be discontinued.

Meanwhile, Kobo’s latest and best model, the Kobo Libra Colour, comes with a color E Ink screen, but there’s no black-and-white version for users who prefer traditional E Ink displays.

Kobo’s decision to focus on color E Ink may have been a mistake, especially now that they have a golden opportunity to attract users leaving the Kindle ecosystem. A true Kindle Paperwhite competitor, with a high-quality black-and-white screen, modern design, and competitive features, could be exactly what’s needed to pull frustrated Kindle users into Kobo’s ecosystem.
