Kobo has released a software update for most of its eReaders, addressing models old and new, though some early models like the Kobo Mini remain unsupported. Unlike the last update, which focused only on newer devices, this update is broadly available with different firmware versions: 4.38.23171 for older models and 4.41.23145 for the newest models (Libra Colour, Clara Colour, and Clara BW).
The update includes several enhancements: a 2024 edition of the Oxford Dictionary of English, improved parental controls, an enhanced OverDrive setup, and a fix for a sync issue. Notably, the Kobo Libra Colour gains a unique feature allowing it to wake from sleep with a press of the page-turn buttons—an option missing from other Kobo models with similar buttons, sparking speculation on feature limitations for older devices.
Here's the release note:
Sync improvements
- Fixed: Sync can become stuck at ‘updating annotations’ after creating certain markups
Parental controls
- Improved clarity around Parental Controls (More > Settings > Accounts)
- Your eReader will now prevent sideloaded books and documents from being added to My Books while parental controls are enabled
- For more information on parental controls, visit kobo.com/families
OverDrive (available on recent Kobo eReader models in select countries)
- Improved clarity of OverDrive setup; OverDrive is the service that powers the Libby app
Dictionary
- Updated the English Dictionary to Oxford Dictionary of English (2024)
Users can either wait for the automatic rollout or download the update manually from Kobo’s Firmware Updates page to install it directly.
