Amazon’s new Kindle Colorsoft brings a color E Ink screen to the Kindle lineup, offering readers the chance to experience color on a Kindle for the first time. While it shares all the premium features of the Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition, such as wireless charging, auto-brightness, and double the storage, its main difference lies in the addition of a Kaleido 3 color screen.
Both devices have the same 7-inch, 300 ppi black-and-white resolution, but the Colorsoft drops to 150 ppi in color. This color layer slightly reduces the screen’s clarity and makes it appear darker when the frontlight is off. Meanwhile, the Paperwhite screen shows higher contrast and sharper text overall. The frontlights differ as well, with the Paperwhite having a warmer tone compared to the bluer hue of the Colorsoft.
The Paperwhite also supports full Dark Mode, while the Colorsoft only partially inverts colors in ebooks. Both devices have similar performance, but the Colorsoft lags slightly when displaying color content, such as in comics. The Paperwhite has an edge in battery life, lasting up to 12 weeks compared to Colorsoft’s 8-week estimate.
With a price of $279, the Colorsoft is significantly more expensive, costing $80 more than the Paperwhite Signature Edition and $120 more than the base Paperwhite. This premium may make it a niche choice for users who prioritize color for comics or graphic content, while most readers may find the classic Paperwhite a better value.
