Is the Kobo Nia a good alternative to the basic Kindle?

I’m returning my second broken basic Kindle for a refund and am exploring alternatives. Since I’m used to the low-res screen of the Kindle, would the Kobo Nia be a decent option for me? Are the performance and usability similar between the two devices?

I’m on a tight budget but really enjoy reading on an eReader, so I want to be sure the Nia fits my needs before spending the money. Honestly, if the Nia works for me, it’ll be great to avoid the hassle of sideloading books onto the Kindle. What do you think?
