If you missed the chance to download your purchased Kindle ebooks before Amazon removed the “Download & Transfer” feature, there are still three ways to back up your books:
1. Kindle Ereader + USB Transfer
• Download ebooks to your Kindle and transfer them to a computer via USB.
• Install Calibre on your computer.
• Install the DeDRM plugin in Calibre to remove DRM.
• Install the KFX Input plugin in Calibre (unless your Kindle uses the older AZW3 format).
• Import your Kindle ebooks into Calibre to back them up and convert formats.
2. Kindle for PC 2.4
• Install an older version of Kindle for PC (2.4).
• Disable auto-updates (it may still update, so keep the installer for reinstallation if needed).
• Follow the same steps as above, installing Calibre, DeDRM, and the KFX Input plugin.
• Import downloaded ebooks (found in Documents > My Kindle Content) into Calibre.
3. Android Emulator
• Set up an Android emulator on your PC to download Kindle books.
• A more complex but effective workaround.
The article stresses backing up your ebooks as you buy them, as these methods may not work indefinitely. Additional tips include adding an E-ink Kindle’s serial number to DeDRM’s customization for proper decryption.
