In his video, Stefan Svartling breaks down common causes of eye strain while reading digital content on devices like e-ink eReaders, smartphones, and tablets, and offers simple solutions for each.

Main Causes of Eye Strain (Ranked Worst to Least Harmful):

  1. Reflections:
    • Most severe. Causes the eyes to constantly refocus, especially if the reflected object is moving (like a ceiling fan or people behind you).
    • Fix: Use matte screen protectors, adjust your position to avoid light sources behind you, or use e-ink screens.
  2. Glare:
    • Harsh lighting or screen angle issues make text hard to read.
    • Fix: Adjust screen angle, use anti-glare screen protectors, or change lighting in your environment.
  3. Too Bright Screens:
    • Common issue indoors where people don’t reduce screen brightness, leading to headaches or migraines.
    • Fix: Adjust brightness and contrast to suit your environment. Try auto-brightness or night mode.
  4. Nearby Bright Light Sources:
    • A bright window behind or beside the screen (e.g., south-facing desk setup) can worsen visibility.
    • Fix: Pull the blinds/curtains, reposition your desk, or use diffused lighting.
  5. Text Too Small:
    • Small fonts cause eye fatigue and slow reading.
    • Fix: Increase font size and choose easy-to-read fonts (e.g., sans serif or serif optimized for screens).
  6. Light Too Blue:
    • Not always a major factor in eye strain unless screen is also very bright.
    • May affect sleep for some.
    • Fix: Use blue light filters, warm color modes, or apps like Night Shift / f.lux.

General Tips for All Devices:
  • Prefer e-ink for longer reading sessions.
  • Use dark mode or sepia where possible.
  • Keep screens clean to reduce unnecessary reflections.
  • Take regular eye breaks (20-20-20 rule: every 20 mins, look at something 20 ft away for 20 seconds).
