The Boox Palma 2 is a compact e-reader with a 6.13″ E Ink Carta 1200 screen, making it taller but narrower than the Kindle (6″) and Kindle Paperwhite (7″). It has a sharper display, smooth scrolling, and BSR for better refresh performance, reducing ghosting compared to previous Onyx devices.
Notable features include programmable buttons, with volume keys that can double as page-turn buttons. However, Dark Mode isn’t as optimized as on Kindles due to the Kindle Android app not being designed for E Ink screens, though NeoReader works better (but lacks DRM support).
While the Palma offers premium hardware (6GB RAM, 128GB storage, fingerprint reader, camera, and memory card slot), these extras may not be necessary for simple e-reading. Its pocketable form factor is a strong advantage, making it more portable than even the basic Kindle.
The high price ($279) is a major drawback since both the Kindle ($109) and Paperwhite ($159) together cost less. While the Palma isn’t quite as good as Kindles for reading Kindle ebooks, its Android OS provides greater versatility, making it a compelling, albeit expensive, alternative.
