Boox Palma 2 Overview

The Boox Palma 2, released in November 2024, is Onyx’s follow-up to the original Palma. Initially an experimental, limited-release device, the first-gen Palma gained popularity, prompting a wider release.

The Palma 2 features only minor upgrades, including a fingerprint sensor, a faster CPU, and Android 13. It retains its 6.13″ E Ink Carta 1200 display (300 ppi) but has a narrower form factor than typical 6″ eReaders, making it more portable.

Key Features & Hardware

Performance: Octa-core CPU with 6GB RAM & 128GB storage, expandable via microSD.
Unique Design: Resembles a phone, with a 16MP camera, LED flash, fingerprint sensor, external speaker, and dual microphones.
Connectivity: USB-C with OTG, WiFi (2.4GHz & 5GHz), and Bluetooth 5.1.
Battery: 3950mAh for extended use.
Functionality: Runs Android 13 with Google Play support, allowing versatile app usage.
Extras: Rotation & light sensors, frontlight with warm & cool adjustments, and text-to-speech.

Pros & Cons

Pros:
Compact & pocketable design.
More versatile than most eReaders with Android OS and advanced hardware.
Fast-refreshing E Ink display with BSR technology.
Customizable controls, including page-turning via volume buttons.

Cons:
Expensive ($279.99).
Lacks a SIM slot, so it can’t function as a phone.
Complicated software, requiring multiple setting adjustments for smooth operation.

Verdict

The Boox Palma 2 is an unusual hybrid between a phone and an eReader. While its compact design, fast performance, and customizable features are appealing, it may be overkill for users who just want a simple eReader. The high price makes it a niche product, and for those not needing all the extras, more affordable eReaders like the Kindle might be a better option. However, its portability and versatility could make it the ideal choice for tech-savvy readers looking for something different.
