Independent bookstores have traditionally been limited to selling only the physical books on their shelves, with few offering online ordering and shipping options. Digital books are widely available, but those looking to avoid major platforms like Amazon, Google, or Kobo have had limited alternatives—until now.
Bookshop.org has introduced an e-book section to its platform, enabling independent bookstores in the U.S. to sell digital books directly to customers and earn 100% of the profits. This initiative strengthens indie bookstores’ ability to compete with Amazon’s Kindle and expands Bookshop.org’s award-winning giveback model.
“When we launched Bookshop.org, the vision was to support local bookstores in their battle against Amazon and other online retailers,” said Andy Hunter, CEO and Founder of Bookshop.org. “This launch represents our commitment to bookstores and their communities, helping them thrive in the digital age.”
Since its launch in 2020, Bookshop.org has raised over $35 million for more than 2,200 independent bookstores across the U.S. As a certified B Corp, the platform dedicates over 80% of its profit margin to supporting local booksellers.
Prominent authors have praised the initiative, with bestselling author James Patterson emphasizing the life-changing role of bookstores and Lev Grossman calling the platform “the missing piece we’ve all been waiting for.”
The e-book platform is accessible via web browsers and mobile apps on Apple and Android devices, further expanding Bookshop.org’s mission to empower independent bookstores against retail giants.
