Are All Non-Kindle E-readers Laggy and Ghosty?

E-readers
Kobo
I’ve used Kindles for years, from the OG model to the Oasis, Paperwhite, etc. The only lag I noticed was with the early keyboard models.

I’ve tried switching away from Amazon, but I keep running into issues with other brands. I recently tried a PocketBook Lux and a Kobo, and both had noticeable lag and ghosting after page turns. I never had that problem with Kindles.

I’m considering the PocketBook Era, but I’m worried it’ll be just as sluggish. Can anyone recommend an e-reader that’s smooth and doesn’t need constant tweaks?

I recently got the Kobo Clara BW, and it’s noticeably faster than my Kindle Basic 2019, which I bought in 2021. It also handles taps more accurately and consistently. Interestingly, even my 2015 Nook is quicker and more reliable than my Kindle.

Definitely not. My Kobo is fast enough, and I haven’t noticed any lag. Ghosting is rarely an issue unless you’re doing something extreme, and if it does happen, a quick double tap on the screen clears it right up.

It’s true that some non-Kindle e-readers can be laggy, but it really depends on the model. The Kobo Libra 2 and Kobo Sage are much smoother than older models and handle page turns without noticeable lag. As for ghosting, it's less common now with newer e-readers, and if it does happen, a quick tap usually clears it.

If you're worried about lag and want a smooth experience, I’d recommend trying the Onyx Boox Note Air 2 or Note 3. They tend to be more responsive and have a very fluid interface.
