Amazon has released new software updates for 10th, 11th, and 12th generation Kindles, including the 2024 Kindle and Kindle Paperwhite models. The updates bring different version numbers for newer (5.17.1.0.4) and older models (5.17.1.0.3). However, the Kindle Colorsoft remains excluded from updates, continuing its trend of stagnation since launch.
Once again, Amazon provides no meaningful details about the update, and the changelog is erroneously dated September, reinforcing the perception that these frequent updates—often bug fixes for issues introduced by prior updates—offer minimal value for users. Notably, long-standing bugs and interface inconsistencies remain unaddressed, and new features are rare for most Kindle models apart from the Kindle Scribe.
The Kindle Scribe has received consistent feature updates, such as the recent 5.17.2 version, but other Kindles have seen only minor improvements, like a faster page-turn feature added months ago. Frustratingly, certain functionality, such as viewing Scribe notes on other Kindles, remains unavailable despite user demand.
For those interested, the latest update can be downloaded manually from Amazon’s Kindle Software Updates page, though devices will eventually auto-update. Meanwhile, older models like the Kindle Voyage, which haven’t been updated in years, continue to function smoothly, contrasting sharply with the frequent and seemingly purposeless updates for newer Kindles.
