Amazon has stopped its long-standing policy of removing ads from ad-supported Kindles for free, according to recent reports. Previously, customers could request ad removal through customer support, often at no cost. However, Amazon now requires users to pay the $20 fee to eliminate ads, which has always been the price difference between ad-supported and ad-free models.
Introduced in 2011, ad-supported Kindles display advertisements on the lock screen and, in older models, on the home screen. While some users tolerate these ads, others find them intrusive, particularly the extra step of swiping the screen to bypass them. Removing ads now involves paying the fee through the “Manage Your Content and Devices” page on Amazon’s website.
This policy change aligns with Amazon’s clear advertising about the $20 discount for ad-supported models, but it ends the unofficial practice of waiving the fee. For those bothered by ads, paying the fee remains the only solution.
