Amazon has temporarily suspended shipping of its first color e-reader, the Kindle Colorsoft, due to a serious screen defect. Customers who pre-ordered or ordered the device will face delivery delays until November 9-18 in the U.S. and November 26 in the U.K. Early shipments, while notified as shipped, remain in Amazon warehouses. The Kindle Colorsoft’s display has a noticeable yellowish bar at the bottom, sparking a wave of negative reviews, leaving the device with a 2.6-star rating out of 350 reviews.
In response, Amazon is contacting reviewers directly, asking them to send their devices back for inspection and offering replacements, while some negative reviews are reportedly being removed. Amazon’s customer service has mentioned a pending software update aimed at minimizing the yellow bar, expected within one to two weeks. Additionally, Amazon updated their product page to clarify that dark mode is not functional on the device.
This flawed launch has led to speculation that Amazon rushed the Kindle Colorsoft to market to compete with other e-readers like Rakuten Kobo and Remarkable, sacrificing quality and testing.
